ACT 1<\/p>\n

SCENE 1<\/p>\n

Neutral, narrating space.<\/strong><\/p>\n

LORNE: Light and shade.<\/p>\n

The dappled green of forest leaves. The splashes of white foam on dark grey seas. The pools of light that collect like water in the fissures of a rock face.<\/p>\n

Light and shade, colour and form; that\u2019s how I try to see the world. The boundaries between one thing and another. The distinctions.<\/p>\n

Anybody who carries a gun in the name of peace needs to be comfortable with shades of grey. I live in no man\u2019s land, surrounded by water and working under fire. Caught between extremes.<\/p>\n

This is what I try to capture in paint on canvas. It\u2019s like trying to bottle lightning. But it helps.<\/p>\n

Interior, Lorne\u2019s quarters, Atlantis. A window is\u00a0open so we can hear both the hum of the city and the\u00a0distant sound of waves lapping against the pier. Door\u00a0chime.<\/strong><\/p>\n

LORNE: Yes?<\/p>\n

Door opens.<\/strong><\/p>\n

GLENNIE: Good morning, Major. May I come in?<\/p>\n

LORNE: I\u2019m under arrest, I can hardly stop you, can I.<\/p>\n

GLENNIE: True enough, but it never hurts to be courteous.<\/p>\n

He enters, the door closes behind him.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Dr David Glennie, pleased to meet you. May I sit?<\/p>\n

LORNE: [GRUNTS, NON-COMMITTAL]<\/p>\n

GLENNIE: So these are the famous paintings. They\u2019re\u2026 remarkable.<\/p>\n

LORNE: I\u2019ll take that as a compliment.<\/p>\n

GLENNIE: Oh, please do. Best I can manage is stick figures. My art teacher at school said I had two left hands. Your mother taught art, didn\u2019t she?<\/p>\n

[BEAT. LORNE WON\u2019T TAKE THE BAIT.]<\/p>\n

LORNE: So who are you? Oversight committee? Come to see if I\u2019m insane?<\/p>\n

GLENNIE: I have no preconceptions, Major. There are people baying for your blood. Court martial, dishonourable discharge, that kind of thing. I\u2019m here at the request of Colonel Carter. She wants an independent assessment of your mental state. When they brought you back here you were\u2026. confused.<\/p>\n

FLASHBACK, slight echo effect.<\/strong><\/p>\n

LORNE: [RAVING]\u00a0It\u2019s so beautiful, all the colours, the shapes, it\u2019s like, magic and wonder and\u2026 sounds, I can see sounds, I can, I can, I can hear light, oh my God, oh my God\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n

Cut back to the open window and the hum of the city; a\u00a0moment to register we\u2019re back in Lorne\u2019s quarters. Then:<\/strong><\/p>\n

LORNE: [SIGHS] I\u2019m fine.<\/p>\n

GLENNIE: Oh come now, Major. I think you know why we\u2019re concerned.<\/p>\n

FLASHBACK, slight echo effect. Alarms in the background. Ops room atmos.<\/strong><\/p>\n

LORNE: [SHOUTING]\u00a0Everybody move back! NOW! Get away from those controls. You too, Colonel Sheppard, so help me God, I will shoot you!<\/em><\/p>\n

Cut back to Lorne\u2019s quarters again.<\/strong><\/p>\n

LORNE: All right. So what, you want me to look at Rorschach tests or something? Please tell me you don\u2019t really want to talk about my mother.<\/p>\n

GLENNIE: [LAUGHS] Don\u2019t worry, I\u2019m a very literal shrink. I\u2019ve collected statements from all the relevant personnel. They\u2019ve told me their versions of events. Now you tell me yours. Simple as that.<\/p>\n

LORNE: That\u2019s it?<\/p>\n

GLENNIE: Uh-huh.<\/p>\n

LORNE: All right. (MORE CONFIDENT) What have I got to lose?<\/p>\n

GLENNIE: Your friends. Your reputation. The rest of your life. Trust me, if you\u2019re not insane now, you will be after twenty years in solitary.<\/p>\n
